Overview

The Bridge, an initiative by Adoption UK and supported by the Woodsmith Foundation, provides essential support for adopted young people, equipping them with employability and life skills while building meaningful relationships and career exploration. The pilot program aims to reduce the risk of adopted young people becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment, or Training), which they are twice as likely to experience as their peers. Since its launch in January 2023, The Bridge has created an inclusive space where young people can connect, overcome challenges, and gain confidence in shaping their futures.

Building skills for life and work

The programme focusses on developing key soft skills—communication, teamwork, resilience, and self-advocacy—which are essential for employability and personal growth. Many adopted young people encounter challenges in education, social settings, and confidence-building, making these skills critical in bridging the gap between their potential and opportunities. By building self-assurance, The Bridge empowers participants to navigate professional environments, build relationships, and advocate for themselves in the workplace.

Through a range of hands-on activities, young people have applied these skills in meaningful ways. Some have presented their experiences to policymakers, including at the Houses of Parliament and local education authorities. Others have contributed to professional training by designing resources such as a board game on care-experienced challenges, now used by social workers. Additionally, participants have engaged in high-level discussions, including meetings with the Minister for Children and Families.

The Bridge has enabled young people to develop essential skills that directly support their future employment prospects. One participant has already completed the Happier Futures Employment Programme, while others have taken steps toward their career aspirations.

A key initiative within the programme involved inviting a Youth Justice Officer to meet with participants, creating opportunities for open and constructive dialogue between adopted youth and law enforcement. This exchange helped build mutual understanding and strengthened relationships between young people and key community figures.

Looking ahead

Previously, with the support of the John Lewis Partnership Foundation, Adoption UK has been able to explore new ways to address the higher rates of NEET status among adopted young people. As the programme evolves, we aim to expand employability opportunities, strengthen partnerships with education and employment sectors, and ensure adopted young people have access to the skills, experiences, and networks they need to thrive. By equipping young people with the tools to succeed in both work and life, The Bridge is laying the foundation for brighter, more confident futures.
