Supporting employers to create inclusive workplaces

Employees can't always leave their worries behind when they start their working day, and that stress can take a toll on their wellbeing - both in the workplace and at home.

Our goal is to make a difference by offering the understanding and support that adoptive parents and adoptees need in the workplace. We are here to help employers learn how they can better support the adoption community, advocate for flexible work policies, and create environments where adoptive parents and adoptees feel empowered and supported in their roles both at work and at home.

Adoptive parents

Some parents caring for children with early life trauma and special educational needs may find it difficult to access work and might need additional support and understanding. Challenges might include;

higher school exclusion rates,
reduced timetables and home-schooling responsibilities,
difficulties accessing childcare,
a lack of special school provision,
a complex and often adversarial educational, health, and care needs system,
difficulties leaving their personal stress and worries at the door when going to work potentially affecting their mental health at home and in the workplace.

Adoptees

Adoption has a lifelong impact. There are an estimated 500,000 adoptees of working age. Some may need additional support in order to access employment or navigate the workplace. Challenges might include;

educational qualifications not matching abilities,
gaps in education/employment history,
application processes which may be challenging for some,
difficulties with mental health and self-esteem,
managing and maintaining relationships in and out of work,
managing complex situations linked to reunions with birth relatives and major life events such as becoming a parent.
