Changes over eight years of the Adoption Barometer: starting out as an adoptive family When a child moves to their new adoptive family, the process often begins with a period of introductions – several days over which the child is gradually introduced to the adopters and their new home. Since the first Adoption Barometer was published in 2019, we have seen a gradual move towards a longer period of introductions, as well as greater use of ‘bump into’ meetings, where the adopters informally meet the child and their carer. In 2025, 72% of new adopters reported having these meetings – a huge increase from 56% in 2021. Back to Adoption Barometer 2026 Manage Cookie Preferences
